Who we are?

A team monitors the ten most popular news websites among the Egyptian public, holding them accountable to their followers.

Our History
AkhbarMeter is the first independent media observatory in Egypt, dedicated to evaluating and ranking the most influential news websites based on their adherence to the principles of professionalism, credibility, and respect for human rights. The initiative was founded by Dr. Haytham Moneis as an academic research project during his postgraduate studies in the UK. It began as a volunteer-based effort in 2014 and was officially launched in 2018 by a team of young professionals committed to promoting transparency and accountability in media. Today, AkhbarMeter is a leading organization in fact-checking and media literacy, running awareness campaigns and educational initiatives that empower the public to detect disinformation—particularly in areas such as climate change, gender, and public health. Through advanced analytical tools and reliable content, we aim to foster critical thinking and build a more transparent and accountable media landscape.
We monitor
Akhbar Meter team monitors the ten most popular news websites among Egyptians. The team carefully selects the monitored content from a variety of sections, including politics, economics, local affairs, entertainment, arts, and sports.
We review
Each piece of content is evaluated using 19 questions based on the Akhbar Meter methodology, which is based on three criteria: professionalism, credibility, and respect for human rights. Each piece of content is scored between 0% and 100%. The higher the percentage, the more reliable the content.
We assess
The Observatory publishes a monthly analysis of the performance of the ten news sites monitored by the team, along with three in-depth analysis reports on examples of the best, worst, and average-performing content.
